Dearest Penn Jersey Roller She-Devils Roller Derby fans,
Hello and how are you? Tuffy Muffy (#5), here, your faithful correspondent from that rough and tumble old-school league, the Penn Jersey She-Devils! I’m that friendly buzz in your ear, reminding you what events you want to be the first to know about; so you can brag about being on the inside of the roller derby world to your friends, of course!
First, I’d like to apologize for the newsletter being so tardy. As you may or may not know my teammate (and “roommate”) Cherry Bomber fractured her collar bone into 3 pieces at practice and had surgery on April 29th and then again on June 12th, 2008. So my days have been filled with giving sponge baths, tying shoe laces, and serving up Percocet and Prune juice cocktails…certainly leaving me with very little luxury time for things like writing newsletters. Fortunately, the skaters and coaches of PJSD have been very supportive and we’re all looking forward to Cherry’s speedy recovery.
But enough of apologies (I didn’t get into roller derby to be nice)! I’m sure what you actually want to know about is the outcome of the Fallen Angels and the Dishonor Roll Spring BREAK game on April 26th. Unfortunately, for the Dishonor Roll, the game meant another heartbreaking defeat, to the tune of a 20-point spread (final score: 52-32). Despite spending significantly more time in the penalty box, the Angels were able to maintain control of the track due in part to their strong blocking and top point scorer Tequila Sunrise (who scored a whopping 25 points!). Personally, my favorite moment was when pivot Rollin Rican took off as jammer and made it through the entire pack, scoring 4 points for her team and celebrated spiritedly with a number of pelvic thrusts and Jersey fist-pumps.
This June heat wave is about to get even hotter now with the next breath-taking showdown between the Sadistic Sweethearts and the Fallen Angels. With a number of the usual suspects away or on the injured list, the teams are having to beg, borrow, and steal substitute players for the Saturday, June 28th game at the International Sports, Skating, and Fun Centre in Mount Laurel, NJ. Doors at 7:30pm, get there early for the best rink-side seating! www.intsports.com/mtl If you don’t see your favourite player out on the rink this weekend, not to worry…our season has been extended, giving all three teams a viable shot at the championship, and all teams should be back at full capacity by round 2.
Which brings us to July. Keep July 19th free to watch our co-ed Skate For A Cause game benefiting the A. J. Foundation for children with autism. Also, for the fans attending this year’s Warped Tour on July 25 at the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ, watch that you don’t get run over by a hottie in quads because we’ll be there too! July 26 we’ll be skating (and possibly still recovering from the night before) at the Newportville Community Day from 11am-5pm at the Newportville Fire Company. It’ll be fun for the whole family!
So whether competitive athletics, partying, or family fun is your thing, the Penn Jersey She-Devils have something for everyone in the months ahead. Look forward to seeing you out!
Sincerely,
Tuffy Muffy #5
